| Federal & state grants | Conditional | Institutions of higher education are eligible for most federal research and education programs. SAM.gov is the federal government's contractor and grantee register. Every federal grant applicant needs an active registration and a UEI number. It is free. If you have never heard of it, you almost certainly do not have one yet — check before you write anything. |
| Private foundation grants | Open | Foundations fund universities routinely, usually through the institution's advancement office. |
| Corporate & small-business grants | Conditional | Some corporate programs fund academic work, usually through a named partnership rather than an open call. |
